Skype a scientist

I’ve been signing for Skype a Scientist for a couple years now and absolutely love it, wanted to share with everyone since their sign up is open now for the semester.

Skype a Scientist is a neat program matching scientists from all over the world with classrooms from all over the world: https://www.skypeascientist.com/

I gave talks to students from kindergarden up to high school and chatted about my career journey, brain, Parkinson’s, and dementia. They come up with the most fun questions, and in some cases you’re the first/only scientist they meet and have the chance to make science accessible as a career option for them. I’ve had students get excited hearing how I have no skills at video games they’re so good at, or how I like the same shows/music as them, or that I’m a Middle Eastern woman in research etc. I love it, and it’s honestly a good experience personally to build your communication skills too on top of it all.

To be matched between Jan-Aug 2026 you can fill out the form: Redirection

You pick the classroom level, type of school, number of classes, language etc you’d be comfortable with. So how much time you want to commit is all up to you and you work out a date/time with the teacher once you get matched so it’s pretty flexible. If you have other programs like this that you volunteer for, do share please!!! I’m always looking around
