Hi all! It was great to see most of you in today’s meeting and see the guide continue to solidify.
See here for detailed notes from the meeting. For a summary and the identification of next steps, see below.
- All task force members vote below on timing of the next meeting. Flagging that Daylight savings time starts on March 10th in the United States so eastern time will be one hour closer to Mexico, Chile, and Brazil!
- All task force member review their sections from the perspective of a NEW data user. Add additional context, explain acronyms, link out referred datasets, etc.
- All task force members review @jgottesman’s summary table. Add rows/columns/comments with your suggestions.
- @malosco @paularp @psaffie @ehutchins @hirotaka @vdardov For your dataset, harmonize study entries to match formatting/detail level of PPMI entry
- @paularp @psaffie and @danieltds to collaborate on data visualization
- @lmackenzie @maya.sanghvi @jgottesman @ehutchins @malosco to collaborate on front matter (what is this guide, who is it for, what does it hope to accomplish, etc.)
Please complete these steps by our next meeting (the week of March 11th). Then, we will solicit feedback from other DCIs. Finally, the task force will present the guide at the April DCI meting.
- March 11th at 1:30 EDT / 17:30 UTC
- March 12th at 1:30 EDT / 17:30 UTC
- March 13th at 1:30 EDT / 17:30 UTC
- March 14th at 1:30 EDT / 17:30 UTC
- March 15th at 1:30 EDT / 17:30 UTC
- None of these options work for me
Hi @DCoP_Innovators
I wanted to provide an additional update on our task force. I think the regular updates to the community are important to allow for feedback along the way in addition to providing a roadmap. We held our third meeting with the task force last week which includes @ehutchins @danieltds @lmackenzie @paularp @psaffie @hirotaka @vdardov @ykfarhan @jgottesman.
As of this meeting, we had all been assigned to one of the following data sets: AMP PD, PPMI, GP2, and Fox Insight. We drafted a description of each data set using a common template with the following sections: Description, Data Features, Data set access, Intended use of data set, strengths and limitations of data set, tips and considerations, FAQs, updates, and codes. After data sets were drafted, task force members provided feedback on others product. At last weeks meeting, we reviewed the draft sections as a group. There was some variability in the amount of detail that was included in each section and therefore we selected a section that we thought was ideal and task force members will now do one more revision to harmonize.
The goal is to have a final evolving document with information about each of these data sets in one centralized location. This document is coming together nicely with the description of data sets but we still need to develop front matter (e.g., authors, title page, table of contents etc). @danieltds @psaffie @paularp are also working on adding a visualization/figure to the project.
Our next meeting is 3/15. Our goal is to present the document/resource to the community in April, allow for a period of time for feedback and revisions, and then go live (still not sure what “live” means yet but it sounded good as I was writing).
If you have ideas that should integrate at this stage, please share!

Hi @DCoP_Innovators
At this point, I think many of you have seen the final but still evolving resource document from the Data Wrangling Guide Task Force. If you have not, it has been posted on Zenodo, see here: Getting Started With Parkinson's Disease Data. It is now titled “Getting Started with Parkinson’s disease Data.” Thank you to the entire Task Force for making this happen: @ehutchins @psaffie @vdardov @jgottesman @hirotaka @paularp @danieltds @maya.sanghvi
I wanted to share my excitement for this resource in this post. This is a document that can be widely shared and used by Community. It will continue to grow as updates on the data sets emerge and new data sets are added to it. It was a rewarding experience to be part of this task force and create a product for the community, as well as build relationships with other community members. I look forward to more experiences like this in the next year!
As for next steps, we plan to host a presentation of the resource in the Fall. During the presentation, we will do a deep dive into the creation of the task force, insight into some of our decisions, and then an overview of the entire document. Please keep a look out for further details.
We also need to develop a method for how to keep this document up-to-date, the biggest challenge for these types of resources.
Please take a look at the posted resource on Zenodo and provide any feedback.

Hi folks, just wanted to note that the guide is now LIVE on the MJFF website!
We’re at round about 50 downloads in the ~month since we published to Zenodo – here’s hoping that this will get some additional visibility and into the hands of more researchers.
If anyone has questions/comments/suggestions for continuing to improve this resource, please let us know!

It gives me great pleasure to know the document is referenced in MJFF’s website. Thanks for sharing, Josh! I’m extremely happy for this! I know iT may sound exagerated for some, but for me, this is a great achievement!
