Hi, everyone. Here Mauricio, from Cleveland Clinic| LARGE-PD

Hi everyone. I’m Mauricio Chaparro-Solano, a Colombian medical geneticist currently pursuing my PhD in Molecular Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. I work under the supervision of Dr. Ignacio (Nacho) Mata, founder and coordinator of the LARGE-PD consortium.

As a Latino, I feel very proud to have the opportunity to be part of LARGE-PD and to contribute to a better understanding of the genetics and epidemiology of Parkinson’s disease in the region.

My PhD research focuses on understanding how genetics impacts the response to PD treatments, with a special emphasis on levodopa-induced dyskinesias, while leveraging the power of machine learning.

I have experience in molecular diagnosis and genetic counseling as part of my medical practice, which has also led to my strong interest in variant interpretation and classification for monogenic PD and related movement disorders, applications of genetic testing, and the process of returning results to patients.

On a more personal note, I’m a very stereotypical Colombian: a salsa lover (both listener and dancer) and a passionate coffee drinker; there’s nothing like a good cup of coffee to start the day!

I’m excited to connect with future colleagues and collaborators!

Nice to have you, Mauricio! I have to ask… how are you making your coffee? (how far down this rabbit hole are you… ).

Hi Josh! It definitely depends on the day of the week, but when I have enough time, using a moka pot is my favorite way to make coffee. I always grind the beans just before brewing. I don’t have a barista machine at home yet, but I’m definitely working my way toward one.

Secret tip for a great cup: always use Colombian bean :hot_beverage:

Nice! I sometimes drink Colombian beans, but not always  .

I tend to go with a V60 (when not distracted by emails…).
